All of us in education are struggling with how best to use new technologies in our classrooms. I feel, like you, that students are so pulled in by technology that it would have to be effective; this can not be enough of a reason however. Our job as 21st century educators is challenging and exciting for so many reasons- but especially because there are so many possibilities for learning with technology. Our lessons and projects need to bring in technology in a meaningful way so it is up to us to play with new things, discover what's available, and to work alongside our students to learn! I enjoyed watching your Slideshare presentation and will be looking for the book you have mentioned.

Hi Scott,

I appreciate the response and to be clear, I am not at all interested in banning cell phones -- in fact, I'd hope for exactly what you suggested.

However, having lived with teenage texting for a while, I worry about the near constant social "tether" that gets established and its heretofore unknown consequences. Even though I agree with what researcher danah boyd has argued on behalf of teens: "we're addicted to our friends, not the computer [phone]", what can or how should we advise this generation of kids that has unprecedented access to their friends?

Do you think that attitude is an aspect of schools and organizations banning of mobile learning? If we embraced these devices as positive learning tools than maybe we could confront the negative aspects a little more. Whenever we ban something, the alternative is to develop their values on their own in their own world. I don't have a study to prove it by any stretch but I wonder how things would be different if we approached these devices differently.

Thanks for your comment. The reason the Library of Congress (LOC) is involved is that the law (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) has a provision in it that allows for a degree of flexibility as technologies and needs change over time. The LOC is the only body charged with this oversight power.

Thanks for the link! Last year I actually contacted Eric Faden about his amazing work because I was wondering how he avoided the issues raised by the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). My worry was that he had to circumvent DVD encryption.

Here's his reply: "Now, in my own case, we developed "A Fair(y) Use Tale" very, VERY carefully knowing that we were directly challenging the most protective and litigious copyright owner on Earth. I was very fortunate to have a top-notch legal team advising me. While DMCA was never a major concern, we avoided its issues by capturing everything from ANALOG sources. DMCA largely protects only against DIGITAL copying so the issue of anti-circumvention became moot."

First of all, congratulations on being selected as one of 50 teachers nationwide as a Google certified teacher. I really can't wait to talk with you about your experience. Just looking at the links about the tips you picked up in a single day in so exciting. When I went to AASA this year, I heard Allan November talk about making every classroom a "global communications center." That phrase has stuck with me and it can happen right now with the leadership of you and the other tech staff developers. Plus, I see Greg's new job as fitting into the mix, too. Can't wait to tallk.
